BSF Rail Road

BSF Rail Road

DSCN1766 Larry Johnson and his son-in-law, Berner, talk with Terry Elmy just after we arrived in Stearns. Berner's wanting a bike so we're hoping he'll be taking many more rides with CR.
DSCN1771 Linda Hickey and Lexa Hooten talk just before lunch. Lexa is the wife of Ron Hooten and this was her first ride with CR. She was great to have along and we're encouraging Ron to talk her into future rides. We just know she'll be hooked like the rest of us!
DSCN1772 First time riders with Country Roads: Don and Dolores Norton. Don and Dolores are neighbors of the Hickeys. We really enjoyed having them come along on the ride.
DSCN1774 Larry and Berner with Julie and Lee Gann.
DSCN1776 This is Vinnie. His owner has a business in Stearns next to the train depot.
DSCN1780 Joe and Cindy May. This was their first time with Country roads and we hope to see more of them in the future.
DSCN1783 I was told this was a chunk of #9 coal.
DSCN1785 All Abooooooaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrd !
DSCN1786 Some of the train personnel have a concert before the train departs.
DSCN1787 Some of the riders decided not to take the train so it was the ten of us who made the journey. Julie and Lee Gann, Cindy and Joe May, Don and Dolores Norton, Jim and Linda Hickey and Debbie and Bobby Smith.
DSCN1791 WOW! Who knew the train track had a loop in it!!!
DSCN1792 Great scenery along the track.
DSCN1793 Joe and Cindy on the platform at Barthell mine.
DSCN1795 The guide at the Barthell mine said that they had to acquire all of the mining equipment currently on display at the mine because when the mine was closed all of the original equipment was, of course, transferred to other mines.
DSCN1796 The mining equipment had to be designed to minimal height.
DSCN1798 The Barthell mine is apparently a concession owned by a local family whose ancestors worked at the mines. One of the buildings at the mine holds the antique car collection of the family.
DSCN1802 This is the view from the coal tipple at the Blue Heron mine. A rail system connected the mines to the tipple where the coal was sorted by size and loaded into the train cars. The train depot and visitors center can be seen in the distance.
DSCN1805 Another view from the coal tipple of the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River.
DSCN1806 View from the train on the return trip.
DSCN1810 Yes, that's the caboose and no, we're not leaving the depot we're arriving at the depot. The engine pushes the cars backward on the return trip. The engine is currently a diesel but next year they hope to switch to a steam engine.
DSCN1811 Time to return home. Debbie and I bid everyone farewell since we decided to stay the night in Stearns.
