Ned Goodman, Johnny and Jake Cagle, Bobby and Debbie Smith, Dan Harvey, and I rode to Cumberland Falls in Kentucky today.   Larry Johnson, who is on our mailing list, joined us on this ride.  Dan, Ned, Larry and I met at Shoney's in Maryville and later met up with Johnny, Jake, Bobby, and Debbie.  We stopped at the Veterans Memorial Overlook for a short break and to enjoy the beautiful view of the Holston River Valley.

We stopped for lunch at the Dupont Lodge, which is located in the Cumberland Falls State Park.  While there we visited the Bob Blair Museum, located at the lodge, where they have several displays of area plants, animals, and history.  It also features Native American artifacts and exhibits.  Jake seemed to particularly enjoy the animal displays. This was the second time I have ridden to the park with the club and it was just as amazing, if not more so, than the first time I saw it. It seemed the water level was up quite a bit which made the waterfalls even more spectacular than before.  Click on the movie listed in the photo section for this article to get an idea of the magnitude of the falls.

I thought I would tell a little about the area, so I looked up information on the internet thinking that perhaps some of you would be interested in visiting the park. Cumberland Falls is about 20 miles southwest of Corbin, Ky., and is located in the Daniel Boone National Forest. It's known as the "Niagara of the South".  The waterfall located there is 60 feet high.  The mist of the falls creates a 'moonbow' on clear nights during a full moon.  This is the only place a moonbow can be seen in the Western Hemisphere.  The dates the moonbow can be seen for the remainder of 2003 are May 14~18, June 12~16, July 11~15, August 10~14, September 8~12, October 8~12, November 7~11 and December 6~10.   Camping, cottages, and rooms in the lodge are available for overnight stays. There is a gift shop located at the falls.
